Bowral, NSW
64 Shepherd Street is a charming family home, originally built in 1951, that takes advantage of its location and was designed to showcase the architecture and design of the traditional homes of “Old Bowral”.
With the property situated on the side of a very steep hill and narrow block, as we began excavation, we encountered many challenges—the most arduous being the discovery of a disused well under the new footings and piers. The home is also situated on the side of a very steep hill and narrow block.
Engineers were called in, and solutions were investigated to ensure that the build could continue. We also needed to ensure that we worked from the back of the block to the front wherever possible, as once the structure was in place, access to the rear of the block was severely limited.
Great care and effort ensured that all selections were in line with the homes of the early 1900s while also considering modern needs and aesthetics.
The bathroom’s combination of a vintage clawfoot tub and intricate tile detailing with a modern shower and plumbing system provided the optimum balance of contemporary building techniques and old-style presentation. The exposed rafters and lining boards in the upstairs outdoor seating area and the galvanised iron roof were all used to keep up with the timeframe—but wooden handrails were replaced with metal ones to ensure structural integrity and durability.
The use of modern building techniques to create a vintage-like aesthetic has made for a comfortable and charming family home that takes full advantage of its location, history, and heritage.
